Canadian Waters, Inc. in Ely, MN kayak to Basswood.

Kayak to Basswood

Long renowned as one of the finest fishing lakes in northern Minnesota, Basswood Lake, with its rocky shores and hundreds of islands, is also one of the most beautiful lakes in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area.Totally within the wilderness, Basswood is divided by the U.S./Canadian border. Half of Basswood is in the BWCAW and half is in Quetico Park.

We designed this trip for those people who have always wanted to try a kayak instead of a canoe. Basswood Lake is an ideal area for kayaks. Easy to get to from either Fall Lake or Moose Lake, Basswood is large enough to spend a week traveling every day and still not see all of the lake. Or, if you prefer to basecamp, there are places on Basswood where you can stay for a week and see very few people. With a mechanical portage at Prairie Portage and the use of portage wheels between Fall Lake and Pipestone Bay, you can get to Basswood without ever unloading your kayak. We have both solo and tandem sea kayaks and specially designed equipment that is made specifically for use in a kayak.

With our kayaks by Wilderness Systems, Dagger, and Current Designs, you can now experience a true wilderness adventure without leaving North America. Protected by a strict permit system, Basswood is a remote wilderness area close to home.
